Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt was an overnight nurse so that she could have the chance to learn about art and literature, or even theater. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was socially aware and taught her to use the arts as a means of expressing herself. While DuVernay grew up within Compton with her family she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. When she was in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage of the home of a juror. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in small production studios right out of high school. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency.
